What were they thinking? When a collection of entrepreneurial men decided it was time to make what was perhaps the most rash and courageous decision known to man. How does one decide to not only forsake their government but do it because they realize their own government has become so abusive that one can no longer morally support it in good conscience. Amazing applicable to 2013 as it was to 1776. The seminal American political philosophy.

The American Crisis Annotated Edition Thomas Paine 9781545411605 Books Reviews

Great contemporary perspective of the American War of Independence by one of the great persuasive writers of the time. Recommended for American History buffs.
I've read lots of American history and often come across a quote that stated that Thomas Paine's Common Sense helped to win the Revolutionary War. Now I understand why.
I appreciated Paine's perspective and could better understand the battles after reading his take on how they developed.
I also loved his sarcasm toward the English officers whom he derided for their ignorance of American values and geography.
I am a long time fan of Revolutionary era writers like Thomas Paine. No wonder this man's passion put to paper helped to inspire those brave men and women who sacrificed what they did to create the foundation of the USA.
This is a must read for anyone seeking inspiration and patriotism. Payne's words are still powerful and sensible for those who love this country almost 240 years later.
If there's a person who can motivate the masses through his writing, I definitely think it is Thomas Paine. You don't have to be an american in order to be amazed by his works, logic, style of writing, etc.
The American Crisis is made up of 13 separate articles written throughout the American Revolution. It was intended as an inspiration for the troops and the inhabitants of the colonies and it reached its purpose. The pieces were written at different times, depending on the situation.
Paine manages to show the reasoning behind each of those decisions and enlightens the reader by bringing it to a level accessible to everyone
As I said in the headint - This book should be made required reading for all US Senators and US Representatives. And not only so, but also for any future candidate for any of these offices including the presidency.

This book captures the essence of why this country of the United States of America is in existence. It describes why the colonists wanted to be free from governmental tyranny, how they fought to be free from governmental tyranny and how to proceed in an existence of a self ruling society with minimal governmental oversight. Thomas Paine is more brilliant than anything that I was ever taught in public school about him. The colonial English verbage is different than how we are accustomed to talking in these modern times. But armed with a decent dictionary you can be blessed by the wisdom of an excellent statesman who lived through the American Revolution, saw first hand the events taking place and certainly must have been an encouragement to those colonists who were sacrificing their lives to live in a decent law abiding free country.

This book is well worth the time to read it and set your mind to thinking.
This is Thomas Paine at his absolute best. These pamphlets were written during the war, usually at crisis points and gave the beleaguered American armies inspiration, and sought to stir the American people into action, if not actually enlisting in the army than at least supplying it. Indeed Gen. Washington had the pamphlets read to his army to encourage them. (" The Times that try men's souls pamphlet was read to them right before the Battle of Trenton) Paine also had ideas for methods to raise money to support the war effort, that to me at least seemed practical. Some of the pamphlets are in answer to speeches in Parliment, the King' s speech, and calling on the British to act honorably. Paine used wit, humor, and of course, common sense! Tom did have the habit of glossing over American defeats no matter how disastrous, (contrast this with his later criticisms of General Washington when Paine felt Washington had betrayed him) one has to remember Paine was trying to inspire the Americans and discourage the British. I would certainly recommend this book to anyone who is reading about the American Revolution, but I would also recommend it any American now The Common Sense of Paine's day is still common sense.
Paine’s writings cover the American and French Revolutions. The pamphlets include Common Sense, the American Crisis, and the Rights of Man. It also has his famous The Age of Reason. The edition is good. It is a great look at the thoughts behind revolution and the rights due every human. It’s also an argument against poverty and the elite.
